Footprints Without Feet Chapter 3: The Midnight Visitor

1. How is Ausable different from other secret agents?

Ans: Ausable breaks the typical image of a secret agent in several ways. Unlike the suave, athletic spies often shown in stories, Ausable is a very overweight man. He lives in a small, ordinary room on the top floor of a plain French hotel, not a luxurious or exciting location. Even after living in Paris for twenty years, he speaks French and German with a noticeable American accent. Instead of dealing with mysterious messages from attractive strangers, his work involves simple phone calls to set up meetings. In short, his appearance and lifestyle are the complete opposite of what one usually imagines a spy to be.

2. Who is Fowler and what is his first authentic thrill of the day?

Ans: Fowler is a young writer who has come to spend an evening with Ausable, hoping to experience the thrilling life of a secret agent. His first real thrill of the day comes not from fancy gadgets or car chases, but from the shocking moment when he enters Ausable's room and sees a man named Max pointing a pistol directly at them.

1. How did Max get in?

Ans: Max used a passkey (a master key that can open many doors) to unlock Ausable's hotel room door and let himself in.

2. How does Ausable say he got in?

Ans: Ausable cleverly pretends to be annoyed and says that Max must have entered through the non-existent balcony. He even complains that this is the second time in a month someone has broken into his room using that balcony, making his story sound more believable to Max.

Think about It

1. “Ausable did not fit any description of a secret agent Fowler hand ever read.” What do secret agents in books and films look like, in your opinion? Discuss in groups or in class some stories or movies featuring spies, detectives and secret agents, and compare their appearance with that of Ausable in this story. (You may mention characters from fiction in languages other than English. In English fiction you may have come across Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, or Miss Marple. Have you watched any movies featuring James Bond?)

Ans: In most books and films, secret agents are portrayed as charismatic, physically fit, and stylish individuals. They are often "tall, dark, and handsome," wear expensive suits, drive fast cars, and are surrounded by glamour and danger. A perfect example is James Bond, who uses high-tech gadgets, performs daring stunts, and always has a beautiful companion. Detectives like Sherlock Holmes are shown as exceptionally intelligent and observant, with a unique sense of style. In contrast, Ausable is overweight, lives in a shabby hotel, and looks very ordinary. However, some characters break the mold. For instance, Hercule Poirot is a brilliant detective who is short and has a distinctive mustache, relying entirely on his "little grey cells." Similarly, Feluda, created by Satyajit Ray, is fit but solves cases primarily with sharp intellect and observation, not just physical strength.

2. How does Ausable manage to make Max believe that there is a balcony attached to his room? Look back at his detailed description of it. What makes it a convincing story?

Ans: Ausable manages to trick Max by creating a detailed and believable story on the spot. He acts irritated, as if the balcony is a real security problem. He mentions that someone else entered through it just a month ago. He then connects the story to the current situation by saying he had requested the police for extra protection because of some important reports he was expecting. When there is a knock at the door, he calmly says it must be the police, which panics Max. The combination of a detailed backstory, Ausable's calm and annoyed acting, and the perfectly timed knock at the door makes the lie about the balcony completely convincing to Max.

3. Looking back at the story, when do you think Ausable thought up his plan for getting rid of Max? Do you think he had worked out his plan in detail right from the beginning? Or did he make up a plan taking advantage of events as they happened?

Ans: Ausable did not have a pre-planned strategy from the beginning. He was a quick thinker who made up his plan by cleverly using the events as they unfolded. When he saw Max in his room, he immediately started looking for a way out. He used the room's actual lack of a balcony to his advantage, inventing the story about it on the spot. The unexpected knock on the door was a lucky chance, but Ausable was smart enough to instantly claim it was the police, which was the final push that made Max jump to his doom. His entire plan was a brilliant example of improvisation under pressure.

Talk about It

1. In this story, Ausable shows great ‘presence of mind’ or the ability to think quickly and act calmly and wisely, in a situation of danger and surprise. Give examples from your own experience, or narrate a story, which shows someone’s presence of mind.

Ans: Presence of mind means staying calm and smart in a sudden crisis. A great example is from another UP Board lesson, 'If I Were You'. In that play, a man named Gerrard is captured by an intruder with a gun. Instead of panicking, Gerrard keeps his cool. He talks to the criminal confidently, pretending to be a criminal on the run himself. He tricks the intruder into believing the police are coming. Then, he cleverly points to a cupboard door, calling it an "exit," and tells the intruder to escape through it. The intruder, in a hurry, rushes into the cupboard and gets trapped. Gerrard's quick thinking and calm behavior saved his life.
