UP Board Solutions for Class 6 English (Honeysuckle) Poem - 17 Vocation

1. Your partner and you may now be able to answer these questions.

(i) Who is the speaker in the poem? Who are the people the speaker meets? What are they doing?

The speaker in the poem is a young school-going child. On his way to and from school, he observes three different people. First, he meets a hawker who is selling bangles and shouting "Bangles, crystal bangles!". Later, he sees a gardener who is digging the ground with his spade. Finally, at night from his window, he watches a watchman who is walking up and down the dark street, swinging his lantern.

(ii) What wishes does the child in the poem make? Why does the child want to be a hawker, a gardener, or a watchman? Pick out the lines in each stanza, which tell us this.

The child wishes he could be a hawker, a gardener, and a watchman. He desires their freedom because, as a child, he has many restrictions.

  • Hawker: He wants to be a hawker so he can spend his day on the road without any hurry, with "no road he must take, no place he must go to, no fixed time when he must come home."
  • Gardener: He wishes to be a gardener who "does what he likes with his spade" and can get his clothes dirty without being scolded. The child notes, "Nobody scolds him if he gets baked in the sun or gets wet."
  • Watchman: He wants to be the watchman who walks all night with his lantern. The child believes "he never once has to go to bed in his life," unlike himself who is sent to bed when it gets dark.

(iii) From the way the child envies the hawker, the gardener and the watchman, we can guess that there are many things the child has to do, or must not do. Make a list of the do’s and don’ts that the child doesn’t like. The first line is done for you.

The Child Must The Child Must Not
Come home at a fixed time. Get his clothes dirty in the dust.
Go to bed when it gets dark. Get baked in the sun or get wet.
Go to school every day. Walk on dark and lonely streets at night.
Follow a strict timetable and rules. Stay outside playing or working as long as he wants.
Be obedient and listen to his parents. Choose his own path or work freely like the adults he sees.

These UP Board Solutions are designed to help students understand the poem's theme of a child's longing for the perceived freedom of adulthood.
