Working with Text
A. 1. Talk to your partner and say whether the following statements are true or false.
(i) No animal can survive without water.

Ans. True. All living creatures need water to survive. However, desert animals have developed special ways to manage with very little water for long periods.

(ii) Deserts are endless sand dunes.

Ans. False. While some deserts have large areas of sand dunes, deserts can also be rocky, gravelly, or have mountains. A desert is primarily defined by its very low rainfall.

(iii) Most snakes are harmless.

Ans. True. Out of the many species of snakes in the world, only a small percentage are poisonous and dangerous to humans. Most snakes are non-venomous and avoid human contact.

(iv) Snakes cannot hear, but they can feel vibrations through the ground.

Ans. True. Snakes do not have external ears, so they cannot hear sounds traveling through the air like we do. Instead, they are very sensitive to vibrations on the ground, which helps them sense approaching danger or prey.

(v) Camels store water in their humps.

Ans. False. This is a common myth. A camel's hump stores fat, not water. This fat can be broken down to provide energy and nourishment when food is scarce. Their ability to go long periods without water is due to other special adaptations in their bodies.

2. Answer the following questions.
(i) How do desert animals survive without water?

Ans: Desert animals survive without water for long periods by using clever strategies to save water and find moisture. For example, the gerbil escapes the extreme heat by staying in cool underground burrows during the day. The darkling beetle has a unique method: it catches dew or moisture on its legs, then lifts them up so the water droplets trickle down into its mouth. Other animals get water from the food they eat.

(ii) How do mongooses kill snakes?

Ans: Mongooses are skilled hunters with very quick reflexes. When fighting a snake, they keep moving swiftly to dodge the snake's strikes. They keep bothering and tiring out the snake. Once the snake is exhausted and its movements slow down, the mongoose seizes the opportunity to attack quickly and deliver a fatal bite.

(iii) How does the hump of the camels help them to survive when there is no water?

Ans: The camel's hump is a storehouse of fat, not water. When food and water are unavailable in the desert, the camel's body uses this stored fat for energy and nutrition. This allows it to survive for many days. As the fat is used up, the hump becomes softer and may even lean to one side, becoming smaller until the camel can eat and drink again to replenish it.
