Chapter 17: Dad and the Cat and the Tree (Poem)

Page No 110: Question 1:
Why was Dad sure he wouldn't fall?

Answer:
Dad was completely confident that he wouldn't fall because he believed he was an excellent climber. He considered climbing the tree to be a very simple and easy task, something as effortless as a child's play.

Question 2:
Describe Plan A and its consequences.

Answer:
In Plan A, Dad decided to use a ladder. He fetched a ladder from the garden shed and leaned it against the tree. Unfortunately, the ladder was not stable. It slipped, causing Dad to fall and land right in the middle of the flower bed.

Question 3:
Which phrase in the poem expresses Dad's self-confidence best?

Answer:
The phrase that best shows Dad's overconfidence is: ‘Child’s play, this is!’ He says this to show he thinks the task is extremely easy and requires no effort at all.

Question 4:
Plan C was a success. What went wrong then?

Answer:
While Plan C was successful in getting Dad onto the tree, something unexpected happened. When he jumped from the garden wall and grabbed the tree, he landed exactly where the cat was stuck. The scared cat immediately jumped down to safety. So, the plan worked for the cat, but the wrong thing was that Dad got stuck in the tree instead, and the cat ended up free on the ground.

Question 5:
The cat was very happy to be on the ground. Pick out the phrase used to express this idea.

Answer:
The poet expresses the cat's happiness with the phrase: ‘Pleased as punch to be safe and sound.’ This means the cat was extremely delighted and relieved to be back safely on solid ground.

Question 6:
Describe the Cat and Dad situation in the beginning and at the end of the poem.

Answer:
At the beginning of the poem, the cat is in trouble, stuck high up on the tree, while Dad is confidently standing on the ground, planning the rescue.
At the end of the poem, the situation is completely reversed. The cat is happily on the ground, safe and sound, while it is Dad who is now stuck up on the tree, needing to be rescued himself.

Question 7:
Why and when did Dad say each of the following? (i) Fall?
(ii) Never mind
(iii) Funny joke
(iv) Rubbish

Answer:
(i) "Fall?" – Dad said this in a surprised and dismissive tone when his wife warned him to be careful and not fall while climbing. He couldn't believe she thought he might fall.

(ii) "Never mind" – He said this right after he fell from the slipping ladder in Plan A. He was trying to act like it was no big deal as he brushed the dirt off his clothes.

(iii) "Funny joke" – Dad said this when his wife warned him again not to fall as he was about to try Plan B. He thought her warning was silly and humorous because he was still sure of his skills.

(iv) "Rubbish" – He exclaimed this when, after the branch broke in Plan B, his wife told him to stop or he'd break his neck. He dismissed her concern as nonsense, refusing to give up.

Question 8:
Do you find the poem humorous? Read aloud lines which make you laugh.

Answer:
Yes, the poem is very humorous. The entire series of events, from Dad's overconfidence to his repeated failures and the final role reversal, is funny. Lines that make us laugh include: "The ladder slipped/ He landed in the flower bed." and the final twist, "But it slipped and he landed/ Right back on the deck.../ And the cat gave a yell/ And leapt to the ground.../ So it’s smiling and smirking/ As Dad is now stuck/ Up on the tree that’s as tall/ As the wall." The image of the smug, safe cat looking up at a stuck Dad is particularly amusing.
