Answer: The neighbours were very greedy. When they heard how the kind old couple's dog had found treasure for them, they forced the dog into their own garden. They hoped the dog would find treasure for them too. The dog scratched at a spot under a pine tree. Excited, the neighbours dug there, but they only found a dead kitten. Feeling angry and cheated, they beat the poor dog to death and threw its body into the hole they had dug.

1. The old farmer is a kind person. What evidence of his kindness do you find in the first two paragraphs.

Answer: The first two paragraphs show the old farmer's kindness clearly. He and his wife treated their pet dog, Muko, like their own child, feeding him carefully with their own chopsticks. They did not have children, so they poured all their love on the dog. The farmer was also kind to other creatures. He would often dig up the earth on purpose to find worms for the birds to eat.

2. What did the dog do to lead the farmer to the hidden gold?

Answer: The dog wanted to show the farmer where the treasure was. He ran to the farmer, whining and moving back and forth excitedly. This behavior made the farmer curious, so he followed the dog. The dog then started scratching the ground eagerly. Thinking his pet had found a bone, the farmer dug at that spot with his hoe and discovered the pot full of gold coins.

3. (i) How did the spirit of the dog help the farmer first?
(ii) How did it help him next?

Answer:
(i) First, the spirit of the dog appeared in the farmer's dream. It told him to cut the pine tree growing over its grave. From the wood, the farmer was to make a mortar for grinding rice and a mill for making bean sauce.
(ii) Next, after the greedy neighbours destroyed the magic mill, the dog's spirit appeared again. It told the farmer to collect the ashes from the burnt mill. These ashes had a special power—if sprinkled on a withered tree, they could make it bloom instantly.

4. Why did the daimio reward the farmer but punish his neighbour for the same act?

Answer: The farmer was rewarded because he used the magical ashes with a good heart. When the daimio's procession passed by, the farmer humbly sprinkled the ashes on an old, withered cherry tree, causing it to burst into beautiful flowers. This pleased the daimio greatly. The neighbour, however, was greedy and tried to copy the act for a reward. He threw ashes wildly, but they had no magic because he got them by being cruel. The ashes didn't make flowers; instead, the wind blew them into the eyes and noses of the daimio and his wife, making them angry. So, he was punished for his rude and selfish behavior.
