Chapter 8: The Bear Story

Q1. Where did the lady find the bear cub? How did she bring it up?

Answer: The lady discovered the bear cub alone in the forest. It was extremely weak and almost dying from hunger. To save its life, she and the old cook carefully fed it milk using a bottle, raising it with great care and affection.

Q2. The bear grew up but “he was a most amiable bear”. Give three examples to prove this.

Answer: The bear was indeed very gentle and friendly. Three clear examples are:
1. He would sit peacefully outside his home, watching the farm animals with calm and friendly eyes.
2. He allowed the children to play with him freely—they would ride on his back and even nap safely between his paws.
3. He patiently played with the three family dogs, who would tug his ears and short tail without him ever getting upset or angry.

Q3. What did the bear eat? There were two things he was not allowed to do. What were they?

Answer: The bear's diet included simple foods like bread, porridge, potatoes, cabbage, and turnip. However, he was strictly forbidden from doing two things:
1. He was not allowed to pluck apples from the trees, as it was against the rules.
2. He was not allowed to touch the beehives. When he once tried, he was punished by being chained up.

Q4. When was the bear tied up with a chain? Why?

Answer: The bear was chained during the night for safety. He was also chained on Sundays when his owner visited her sister. She did this because she felt it was unsafe for him to roam freely in the forest where he might get into trouble or be tempted to do something wrong.

Q5. What happened one Sunday when the lady was going to her sister’s house? What did the lady do? What was the bear’s reaction?

Answer: One Sunday, while walking to her sister's house, the lady saw a bear running towards her. Mistaking it for her own pet, she became furious. She scolded the bear for following her and noticed it wasn't wearing its collar. In her anger, she hit the bear on the nose with her parasol so hard that it broke. The bear seemed to try to communicate by opening its mouth a few times, then simply turned around and walked away.

Q6. Why was the bear looking sorry for himself in the evening? Why did the cook get angry with her mistress?

Answer: In the evening, the bear looked sad because he had been kept on a chain the entire day. When the lady returned, she mistakenly scolded him for following her earlier and punished him with two more days of chaining. The cook, who loved the bear dearly, became angry because she knew the bear had been well-behaved all day, waiting patiently by his kennel for his owner to return. She felt the punishment was unfair.

Discuss The Following Topics In Groups

Q1. Most people keep dogs and cats as pets. Can you think of some unusual pets that people keep?

Answer: (This is a group discussion question. Students are encouraged to think and share their ideas.) Some people keep unusual pets like rabbits, turtles, parrots, guinea pigs, snakes, lizards, spiders, or even farm animals like goats as companions.

Q2. The second bear did not attack the lady because he was afraid of her. Do you agree?

Answer: (This is a group discussion question. Students are encouraged to think and share their ideas.) It is possible. The wild bear might have been surprised or confused by the lady's bold and angry behavior, causing him to retreat instead of attacking. Alternatively, he may not have been hungry or felt threatened enough to attack.
