Answer the following questions.
1. Why did the king want no more talk about the hilsa-fish?

Answer: The king was tired of hearing about the Hilsa-fish from everyone. It was the season for Hilsa, and people everywhere were talking only about it. The king felt his courtiers were wasting their precious time on this silly topic instead of discussing important matters of the kingdom.


2. What did the king ask Gopal to do to prove that he was clever?

Answer: To prove his cleverness, the king challenged Gopal to buy a big Hilsa-fish and bring it to the palace. The tricky part was that during his entire journey, no one should ask him a single question about the fish. This seemed impossible because everyone was talking about Hilsa at that time.


3. What three things did Gopal do before he went to buy his hilsa-fish?

Answer: Before going to buy the fish, Gopal made a funny plan. He did three strange things:

  1. He shaved only one side of his beard, leaving the other side hairy.
  2. He smeared his body with white ash, making himself look dusty and weird.
  3. He wore torn and dirty rags instead of normal clothes.


4. How did Gopal get inside the palace to see the king after he had bought the fish?

Answer: When Gopal reached the palace gate, the guards stopped him because of his crazy look. So, Gopal started dancing and singing very loudly. His noisy performance was heard inside the court. The curious king then sent a messenger to bring this strange man inside to see what was happening.


5. Explain why no one seemed to be interested in talking about the hilsa-fish which Gopal had bought.

Answer: Gopal’s plan worked perfectly. His half-shaved face, ash-smeared body, and torn clothes made him look so funny and mad that he became the main attraction. People on the street were so busy staring at him, laughing, and talking about his ridiculous appearance that they completely ignored the Hilsa-fish he was carrying.


6. Write ‘True’ or ‘False’ against each of the following sentences.

(ii) Gopal was a madman.

(vi) No, his large antlers get stuck in the bushes, preventing him from hiding.

(ix) Yes, finally he manages to free his horns and runs away with his fast legs, so he is free.
(x) The stag says that he was proud of his horns which almost got him killed, but he was ashamed of his legs which actually saved his life.

Answer:

Title: The Vain Stag

Once, a proud stag went to a pond to drink water. While drinking, he saw his reflection. He admired his beautiful, tall antlers but felt ashamed of his thin and skinny legs. Suddenly, he heard the noise of hunters and dogs. He immediately started running to save his life. His strong and fast legs helped him run deep into the forest, leaving the hunters far behind. Tired, he tried to hide inside a thick bush. But his huge antlers got tangled in the branches. He struggled hard to free himself. Just as the hunters were about to catch him, he broke free and ran away. He then realized his mistake. The legs he thought were ugly saved him, while the beautiful horns he was so proud of nearly caused his death. He learned that true value is not always in what looks good.
