Think About It

1. In what way is Iswaran an asset to Mahendra?

Ans: Iswaran was an invaluable companion and helper to Mahendra. He was a dedicated and loyal servant who willingly accompanied Mahendra to all his remote work postings. Beyond his duties of cooking and housekeeping, Iswaran was a master storyteller who could turn any ordinary event into a thrilling tale, keeping Mahendra thoroughly entertained. He was also remarkably resourceful, able to prepare tasty meals with simple, locally available ingredients, making life comfortable and enjoyable for his master in isolated locations.

2. How does Iswaran describe the uprooted tree on the highway? What effect does he want to create in his listeners?

Ans: Iswaran describes the uprooted tree with great theatrical flair. He sets the scene on a lonely, deserted road where he is travelling alone. With dramatic gestures, he recounts seeing a dark, massive shape sprawled across the path, which he initially mistakes for a giant wild beast. His heart pounds with fear, and he considers turning back. Only upon cautiously approaching does he realize it's merely a fallen tree. Through this narration, Iswaran aims to build suspense and deliver a surprise, transforming a mundane observation into a mini-adventure for his audience.

3. How does he narrate the story of the tusker? Does it appear to be plausible?

Ans: Iswaran narrates the tusker story like an epic tale. He begins by describing the elephant's destructive rampage through a town and a school playground, causing panic. He then places himself, as a young boy, at the center of the action, claiming he bravely confronted the mad elephant. According to him, with a single, precise blow of a cane on the elephant's toenail, he made the giant beast collapse. This story does not appear plausible. It is highly exaggerated and seems like a fictional account crafted by Iswaran to showcase his (imagined) heroism and storytelling skills.

4. Why does the author say that Iswaran seemed to more than make up for the absence of a TV in Mahendra’s living quarters?

Ans: The author says this because Iswaran was a complete source of entertainment for Mahendra. In the evenings, after Mahendra's work, Iswaran would not only serve him dinner but also engage him in conversation and narrate captivating stories filled with drama and suspense. His vivid storytelling was so engaging that Mahendra never felt bored or lonely. Iswaran's narratives were more interactive and personal than television, effectively eliminating any need for a TV set in Mahendra's simple living quarters.

5. Mahendra calls ghosts or spirits a figment of the imagination. What happens to him on a full-moon night?

Ans: Despite dismissing ghosts as imaginary, Mahendra has a terrifying experience on a full-moon night. He is awakened by a low, mournful sound near his window. Initially dismissing it as a cat, he soon realizes the sound is too deep and unnatural. Though terrified and trying to avoid looking, the haunting moans grow louder. Finally, overcome by a dreadful curiosity, he peeks out and sees a dark, ghostly figure of a woman holding a bundle in the moonlight. This sight petrifies him, leaving him sweating and breathless with fear.

6. Can you think of some other ending for the story?

Ans: Yes, several alternative endings are possible. For instance, Mahendra could have decided to investigate the ghostly sight rationally. The next day, he might discover that the "ghost" was actually a trick played by Iswaran using a bedsheet and a sack, revealing Iswaran's desire to scare his master into staying at that posting. Alternatively, Mahendra could have confronted his fear, stayed, and later found a logical explanation for the sounds and shadows, strengthening his belief in reason over superstition. Another ending could show Mahendra and Iswaran leaving together, with Mahendra realizing he values Iswaran's companionship more than his fear of the unknown.
